Q: What is the origin of the word ‘golf?’

A: The word ‘golf’ comes from the Dutch word, ‘kolf’ which means ‘club’. In the Scottish term in the late 14 century, the term evolved into ‘goff’ or ‘gouff’ which in turn evolved into ‘golf’ in the 16th century.

Q: How long can a golf ball last under normal storage conditions?

Q: Do those dimple patterns affect how the ball travels?

A: Yes they do because they provide the ball with the lift needed to make itself airborne. The dimples can be deep or shallow.

Deep dimples give balls lower trajectory and shallow ones make the ball fly at higher trajectories.

Q: How many dimples do golf balls have?

A: Regulation balls have 336 dimples however there are balls that have anywhere from 300 to 500 dimples or pips. There no additional benefits to this though and this is a purely manufacturer’s idea.

Why You Should Take The Time To Teach Your Own Baby Sign Language

There’s good news for parents and babies and its welcome news indeed. It’s called baby sign language. The lack of a means for communication between a parent and a baby has always been frustrating for both parties. A parent hears their child crying and is helpless to understand what the baby wants.

They do the standard checks, like feeling the diaper for wetness or putting their hand on the baby’s head to check for fever. If neither of those turn out to be the problem, the child continues to cry and the parent tries to comfort the baby, not knowing what else to do. With baby sign language, the lines of communication become open and helps put an end to this frustration.

What is Baby Sign Language?

Baby sign language is a new form of communication, combining hand gestures with word association. By using these gestures, parents are able to teach their children how to communicate what they want, before the child is able to speak. The learning abilities of children are limited to their senses such as sight, sound and touch. Because the learning method combines all of these senses, it is easy for the parent to teach and the child to learn.

How do you Teach Baby Sign Language?

Teaching your child this communication skill is done by a method called modeling. Linking simple words with gestures does this. Your child might be too young to actually be able to make the gestures, but you can still begin to teach them the meaning of them. This way, when they are older and have better command of their bodies, they will already know the gestures to use to communicate with you.

For example, whenever you are about to feed your child, before you do, say “eat” and make an easy hand gesture like pointing to your mouth. Make sure your baby can clearly see the gestures, so they can remember them. Another good word to teach is “more”. When you are rocking your child or doing something else that you know gives your baby pleasure, stop periodically and say “more”, before beginning again. Also begin associating these words and signs with objects.

Before handing them an item like a ball, say “ball”. Start slowly and add on words gradually. This gives the baby time to learn and remember what you are teaching them. It’s important not to try to force them to learn these gestures. Let them pick it up at their own pace.

Teaching your baby sign language is rewarding and by the time they are actually able to speak, they will already know the right words to use to let you know exactly what they need.

10 Questions on Bosch Dishwashers

I love Bosch dishwashers. I mean that. I really love ‘em. They look great, are made well and I rarely ever have a customer complain about them post-sale.

They are also extremely flexible from a price-perspective, with dishwasher models in the $500′s that can fit into the tightest of budgets, to the 800 Plus Series models that are comfortable in trophy kitchens. Bosch has an offering for EVERYONE.

As I am constantly fielding queries about Bosch dishwashers here are some of the more common questions I receive about them. The process of buying a dishwasher isn’t as streamlined as it once was and with all the info and opinions brought forth by the Web, that leads to more confusion. Hopefully this helps. Read the following Q & A and if you have additional questions send them in.

Q. Why Are My Dishes Still Wet When the Cycle is Over?

A. You have to use Jet Dry to get a Bosch (or other European dishwasher) to perform at its max capacity.

No Jet-Dry means wet dishes folks.

Q. I’m on a budget and only have about $600 max to spend. Can I still get a Bosch or should I be focused on a “landlord special” from Frigidaire?

A. No need for the landlord special!!! You need to check out Bosch’s Ascenta Evolution series. This is Bosch’s introductory line which has very mild price points. Go with black or white. They are all NSF certified to eliminate 99% of bacteria and are still relatively quiet at around 50-53 decibels.

Q. I only buy American. Show me a GE.

A. Bosch is owned by a German conglomerate but the majority of their dishwashers are made in the US, so you are supporting US workers when you buy a Bosch. German Engineering + American Manufacturing Muscle = Killer Combo!

Q. Bosch makes too many dishwashers…800 series, 500 series, Integra, Evolution..I’m confused.

A. Focus on the sweet spot – that’s the Bosch 500 Series, specifically the Integra line. The SHX45 or SHX68 are beasts and you can get into them for less than a grand…if you’re doing business with the right dealer.

The bring it all – Energy Star certification, quiet, hidden controls…yum.

Q. I want a third rack for cutlery silverware. This means I need to buy a Miele, correct?

A. Nope. Bosch offers the third rack in their 800 Plus series. But remember – you need to snap each piece of silverware in. No throwing pieces in there and letting the dw run.

Q. I want an 18″ dw in stainless. Does Bosch make one?

A. Yes they do but you have to order a stainless panel kit separately.

Q. Are Bosch dishwashers prone to repair?

A. Listen, no brand is perfect. Bosch will have its share of hiccups as will everyone else. I can tell you that they are probably more reliable than most and most importantly when they do have a noted problem (as when they had their dishwasher recall a few years ago), Bosch was very proactive in protecting consumers and remedying the problem.

Q. Nothing grosses me out more than a kitchen covered in stainless steel. Can I panel my Bosch dishwasher so it matches my cabinets?

A. Yes you can. Look for Integra models that start with the prefix “SHV” or “SRV” if you’re looking for an 18″ dishwasher.

Q. How many different handle options does Bosch offer?

A. Technically two, but I’m going to say three…the original curved handle, a tubular handle that matches the SubZero classic handle, and you can use your own handle if you are buying an SHV model.

Q. What does Consumer Reports think of Bosch dishwashers?

A. They dig ‘em. Last time I checked, 2 of the top 3 rated dishwashers in CR were made by Bosch.

Tis the Season For Some Manners!

It has happened to us all, the family is gathered, little Johnny excitedly rips off the decorative bow and paper, squeals with delight over the toy, and immediately rushes on to the next present. Poor Aunt Betty, she doesn’t get a thank you, a hug, or any other acknowledgment of her generosity. Mom and Dad are embarrassed and a bit frustrated with Johnny, yet he is oblivious to it all!

Parents want their children to remember to say ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ and often times when a child forgets to use their manners, parents give a strong look or a quick, “What do you say?” These types of reminders can be embarrassing for the child. A simple, fun, and effective way to teach and reinforce manners, not only for the holidays, but for day-to-day activities is to teach children the American Sign Language signs for manners.

Psychologist Sonja Benson, Ph.D, PLLC says, “When children learn and use manners it helps children interact socially in a way that will increase their likelihood of positive interactions and better relationships. Who doesn’t like a person who says please and thank you?”

Teaching some basic ASL signs is not only fun, but can have a lasting, positive effect on children. Some great manner signs to teach your children include please, thank you, and you’re welcome.

Here are a few tips to make signing successful:

· When your child brings you a toy, or helps you in some way, say and sign ‘thank you.’

· When your child asks for a snack, drink, or a toy, show them the sign for ‘please’ and remind them it is important to say (or sign) please when asking for something.

· Talk about the holidays and practice what signs/manners your child can use after opening a present.

· Provide a variety of opportunities to model and practice signs. Dr. Benson adds, “Adults need to do their part to help these manners become habit by noticing when they are used and commenting along the lines of “I like it when you say please.” “That was nice.” or “Grandma really feels good when you say thank you for the gift she gave you.”

· Provide positive feedback when your child is using their manners.

It is natural for children to need reminders for using manners. Dr. Benson says, “An unobtrusive signed reminder is a nice way of giving a nudge without it really seeming like a reminder was needed. Kids can use their manners without looking like they had to constantly be prompted.”

Renting a Commercial Tent FAQ

When involved in a one-time off event, either organizing or merely participating, we’re often constrained by the amount of time and resources we can spend. That is a notch up more true for outdoor events like fairs, weddings and the like, where commercial tents are the choice of the day and dealing with the purchase, set up, maintenance and fold up processes is not something we always can afford to focus our attention on. It is in those cases when it is cheaper and convenient to rent a tent and save ourselves all the trouble.

Q: Why rent a commercial tent?

A: You pay less than buying your own tent, you get the tent delivered and installed (most companies do that) in the location of your choice.

Q: How big a tent should you rent?

A: You answer a system of questions and based on that the right size of tent is chosen for you. Of course you are going to be presented with a drawing of the tent exterior and interior layout in advance.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The normal price, depending on the scale of the event and the number of people expected, varies between 30-40 $ per person. That includes the tent itself, furniture, dishes, lighting and so on., excluding the delivery costs only.

Q: Is there a time limit for the rent?

A: It depends on the company policy, but the commonly accepted practice is to allow for 5 to 7 days of rental period.

Q: Are there prerequisites for the condition of the accessories at the end of the rental period?

A: Most of the time, no. Just remove the food off dishes, put linens back into the tubs they came with and so on.

Q: Are the accessories set up by the company?

A: Mostly no, that is up to you once the accessories are stacked up inside the tent.

Q: Is soft ground mandatory, what about asphalt and such?

A: Most companies offer an additional anchor service when necessary, those can only be used with specific type of tents though and cost you additionally.

Q: What about permissions on public grounds?

A: You’d have to sort those out yourselves as the commercial tent rental companies won’t agree to deliver anything until you have required and approved a permit from the city or town management.

Q: What if there are no access roads to the place?

A: It is necessary to have accessible road to at least a close nearby location and that is wide and open enough to accommodate a bus sized truck.
